There are some individuals within the UFO community which believe that God was most likely an extraterrestrial being. That a technologically superior race visited the earth during ancient times and were mistaken for God. These individuals suggest that if our civilization were to discover another earth-like planet with primitive inhabitants our use of advanced technology and knowledge of the heavens could lead primitive societies to believe that we are Gods, just as Cortez was thought to have been a messenger of the Gods to the ancient Aztecs. Human beings now possess the technology to travel to other planets and manipulate DNA; the ability to create other civilizations in ‘ our image’. More and more researchers are even beginning to wonder if this scenario had played out with human beings before as was recorded in the Bible!

Could God Have Actually Been an Extraterrestrial?

Some religious followers oppose the idea of extra terrestrials being mistaken for God. On July 8,1997 American television evangelist, Pat Robertson, advocated death by stoning for all UFO enthusiasts on his national television show ‘The 700 Club’. He believed that if extra terrestrials exist they are merely demons trying to lead people away from Christ. Most members of the religious community are less extreme in their thinking and believe that it is possible to have intelligent life on other worlds that are part of God’s flock.

Some individuals have taken their belief that extraterrestrials are God to extremes; as evidenced by the alarming incident on March 26, 1997 of 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate cult committing mass suicide. Members of Heaven’s Gate felt by committing suicide during the passing of the Hale-Bopp comet they would be transported to a UFO hiding behind the comet and move onto a higher plane of existence. The members felt that the inhabitants of the UFO would guide them towards salvation.

The Bible is also riddled with passages that could be taken as ancient records illustrating that man’s ‘God’ could very well have been an extra terrestrial:

“And it came to pass… That the sons of God [angels] saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:1-2,4).

According to ancient alien theorists, extraterrestrials with superior knowledge of science and engineering landed on Earth thousands of years ago, sharing their expertise with early civilizations and forever changing the course of human history. But how did this concept develop, and is there any evidence to support it?

Ancient alien theory grew out of the centuries-old idea that life exists on other planets, and that humans and extraterrestrials have crossed paths before. The theme of human-alien interaction was thrust into the spotlight in the 1960s, driven by a wave of UFO sightings and popular films like 2001: A Space Odyssey. The space program played no small part in this as well: If mankind could travel to other planets, why couldn’t extraterrestrials visit Earth?

In 1968, the Swiss author Erich von Daniken published Chariots of the Gods?, which became an immediate bestseller. In it, he put forth his hypothesis that, thousands of years ago, space travelers from other planets visited Earth, where they taught humans about technology and influenced ancient religions. He is regarded by many as the father of ancient alien theory, also known as the ancient astronaut theory. Most ancient alien theorists, including von Daniken, point to two types of evidence to support their ideas.

The first is ancient religious texts in which humans witness and interact with gods or other heavenly beings who descend from the sky-sometimes in vehicles resembling spaceships-and possess spectacular powers. The second is physical specimens such as artwork depicting alien-like figures and ancient architectural marvels like Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt.

If aliens visited Earth in the past, could they make an appearance in the future? For ancient alien theorists, the answer is a resounding yes. They believe that, by sharing their views with the world, they can help prepare future generations for the inevitable encounter that awaits them.
