Many years ago the Treasure Holt, located in Clacton-On-Sea in Essex England and thought to date from 1639, was an inn set in almost the middle of nowhere with only a dirt track made by horse and cart leading to it through the dense wooded area surrounding the Treasure Holt. The inn was mainly used by people traveling on horseback and foot.
Almost every week of the year, smugglers would hide themselves and their contraband in the inn as it was in ideal place with its seclusion.
At this same point in time the inn was owned by a couple who willingly helped the smugglers and thieves hide their contraband and let them know if anyone suspicious hanging around possibly trying to catch them. The innkeeper’s wife was a well known witch who held witches covens at the inn which usually lasted upto 3 days. People would travel for miles on foot to attend one of her meetings.
The Innkeeper and his wife brewed their own beverages which were highly potent. Sometimes the smugglers would let the Innkeepers keep some of the contraband to sell in the inn as a “Thank You” for being their lookout. This along with the home-brewing ensured the inn was always fully stocked.
A tunnel was dug starting from the stables behind the inn which branched off in different directions. One leading to the cemetery, one leading to the other side of the thicket and a third which was never completed. This gave the smugglers a perfect escape route.
When a traveler arrived at the inn they were greeted with a free beverage which was usually home-brewed and a big meal which was also on the house. This gesture was always accepted because the trek to the inn was a tiresome one for both the traveler and their horse. On arrival the horse was also treated well in the comfy stable with feed and drink. Once the free meal had been consumed by the weary traveler, another strong drink of their brew was given to the weary traveler to relax their travel-weary bodies even more.
The Innkeeper would then offer the traveler a comfy room to rest for a while until their contacts arrived at the inn. The Innkeepers wife would follow them into the room with another highly potent drink which would almost always send the traveler into a deep sleep. After a short while the Innkeepers would then enter the room of the sleeping traveler and rummage through his bags and pockets looking for his money. When they found it they would take a large amount leaving the traveler with next to nothing. If the traveler questioned the Innkeepers about the missing money the next morning they would tell him that he bought the services of the wife the night before knowing that he would have been too drunk to remember anything.
Some unlucky travelers would wake up as the Innkeepers were looking through their baggage. It they did the Innkeeper would hit them over the head with a hefty club to knock them out. Sometimes this resulted in them being killed with the blow.
There was a trap door in the floor which the Innkeepers would drop the body through into the room below. In the room where the body landed there was another trapdoor in the floor directly beneath the one upstairs. The body was then dropped through the second trapdoor and down the well immediately below. The Innkeepers became very efficient with this process over the years and it is believed they killed dozens of unlucky men who ended up in the well.
Today the trapdoors and well still exist in the Treasure Holt. The well is now covered with a concrete slab.
Over the years the Treasure Holt was used an an inn, a family home, and a farm house.

Workmen who were replacing some of the flooring in 1928 found parts of a human skeleton, Buckles, a clay smoking pipe, a few old coins and an old token. It is not known who the skeleton was in life and why he was not thrown down the well like all the others who died at the inn. It is thought that this could even be the skeleton of the evil Innkeeper.
In 1972 the BBC were filming a medium who had never been to Treasure Holt before and did not know any of the history of the building. The medium walked over the slab covering the well and had a strong shudder and said he was picking up bad feelings from the spot he was stood on.
Years ago the well was drained and cleaned out. It was found to be around forty feet deep and contained dozens of human skeletons, old shoes, buckles, belts, swords and flintlock pistols.
Witchcraft, murder, robbery and human sacrifice are all said to have happened at Treasure Holt. Based on the Essex coast, it is alleged to have been a house of ill repute and haven for smugglers years ago.
Derek is guided round the house by the ghost of Simon The Monk. As he moves around, he sees The Crinoline Lady, while ghostly Uncle Percy communicates to the crew through Derek.
