“We’ve learned what a young species we really are and how similar so many of us are, particularly the human populations that originated in Africa over 70,000 years ago” said McCarthy of the National Geographic Genographic Project.
“All this genetic data has verified many of the theories derived from archaeological and linguistic studies, that the human ancestors of many modern human populations around the world originated in Africa,” he added. Furthermore, by working under the assumption that the more closely related different human populations are to one another, the more similar their genomes will be—scientists have been able to roughly chart out the path that humanity has taken as our ancestors spread out around the world.
