The 1950s was a golden age for flying saucer movies and the power of their stories and imagery has had a long-term impact on film makers right up to the present day.

In 2005, two new versions of The War of the Worlds were produced by Steven Spielberg and Timothy Hines. In 2008 there was a re-make of The Day the Earth Stood Still, directed by Scott Derrickson, and in 2009 we have been treated to Alien Trespass (directed by R. W. Goodwin), Race to Witch Mountain (directed by Andy Fickman) and the animated Aliens vs Monsters (directed by Conrad Vernon and Rob Letterman).

It can be argued that these movies shape and manipulate the experiences reported by real people, or that they simply reflect our continuing fascination with the possibility that we are not alone in this vast universe. Whatever your viewpoint, I have selected ten of my favorite flying saucer movies.
